Laparoscopic Scissor Grasper

Exchanging instruments in laparoscopic procedures is a coordinated effort by multiple members of the surgical team. Every instrument exchange requires the following steps:

  1. The surgeon stops the procedure.
  2. The surgeon withdraws the instrument.
  3. The assistant zooms out with the camera to watch the instrument tip.
  4. The scrub nurse receives the instrument for wipe down and preparation for use again.
  5. The scrub nurse then hands the surgeon the next instrument.
  6. The surgeon then inserts the instrument and, under direct visualization, carefully advances it to the desired location.
  7. The scope operator also must get positioned for continuing with the procedure.

Unmet Clinical Needs:

  • Reduced risks of instrument exchanges –Each one of these steps adds risks and increases valuable operative time.
    • ISI’s Scissor Grasper is designed to essentially perform an instrument exchange with the flip of the surgeon’s finger. Eliminating the need for the orchestrated maneuvers previously described.
  • Easy switching between sharp shears and delicate a traumatic graspers – As exchanges of instruments are so time consuming and frustrating many times delicate dissecting is performed with sharp shears or scissors. This is very risky and can easily lead to problems.
    • ISI’s Scissor Grasper has the unique ability to switch, at the flick of the finger, between a slender pair of delicate dissector or grasper jaws to a pair of sharp shears.
  • A purpose built instrument for knot tying and suture cutting – Suturing laparoscopically is challenging even for the most skilled surgeons and tying knots and then cutting sutures prior to continued suturing involves time consuming instrument exchanges.
    • ISI’s Scissor Grasper has been designed with this specific need in mind enabling superior suture handling combined with the ability to cut sutures when needed.
